Short answer: The Great Migration is famous for its wildebeest, but it is the 250,000 plains zebra scattered through the columns who often decide where the herds go first. They are the pathfinders of the endless plains — and the reason the wildebeest behind them find grass worth eating at all.

The herd that isn't one species

We talk about the Great Migration as a single river of wildebeest, yet it is really a travelling partnership of grazers. More than 2 million animals circle the Serengeti ecosystem each year, rainfall pulling them along an ancient loop. Zebra are the minority partner by number, but they punch far above their weight — because they move first, and the rest follow the path they clear.

Why the zebra go first

This ordering isn't an accident of the crowd — it is a body-size-dependent grazing succession that ecologists have mapped across the Serengeti. Zebra are hindgut fermenters, which means they can process tough, fibrous, low-nutrition grass that a wildebeest's more selective stomach handles poorly. So the zebra go in first and shear off the tall, stemmy tops of a fresh sward.

What they leave behind is transformed. Once the coarse canopy is gone, shorter, leafier, more digestible growth is exposed for the wildebeest that press in behind them. The gazelle, smaller still, take the very shortest shoots last. Each species effectively farms the plain for the next — a relay of mouths working down through the grass layers.

Pathfinders with memory and eyesight

Zebra bring two things the short-sighted, instinct-driven wildebeest lack: excellent eyesight and strong spatial memory. Family groups are led by experienced mares who appear to remember where water and good grazing lay in previous years. In the mixed herds, that memory becomes a navigation aid for the whole column. Where the landscape offers a choice, the zebra's decision often sets the direction, and the wildebeest's famous "swarm intelligence" does the rest.

There is safety in the arrangement too. Zebra are alert and will stand and defend; a kicking stallion is a serious deterrent to lions. Travelling within a vast, watchful mixed herd dilutes every individual's risk — useful on a route where roughly 250,000 wildebeest die each year to predators, crocodiles, exhaustion and the Mara's currents.

Following the zebra through the year

The partnership never stops moving. Timing is driven by rainfall, so treat every date as a window, not a guarantee:

  • Dec–Mar: the southern short-grass plains around Ndutu — calving country, where up to 8,000 wildebeest calves can be born in a single day.

  • Apr–May: the herds drift north-west through central Seronera as the long rains green the plains.

  • Jun–Jul: the western corridor and the Grumeti, the first river crossings of the year.

  • Jul–Oct: the northern Serengeti and the Mara River crossings, peaking around September.

  • Nov: the short rains call the whole procession back south to begin again.

What it means on safari

Next time you watch the migration, look past the wildebeest. The scattered bands of stripes threading through them are not hangers-on; they are the advance party. In a park of 14,763 km², protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the zebra are a quiet reminder that the greatest wildlife spectacle on Earth runs on cooperation as much as on spectacle.

Watch for the stripes, and you'll start to see who is really leading the way.
