Lions: the plains' cooperative kings
With 3,000 or more lions, the Serengeti supports one of the largest lion populations of any protected area in Africa. They live in prides that defend territory cooperatively, and the central Seronera region — with its rocky kopjes and permanent water — offers some of the most reliable year-round lion viewing anywhere. Kopjes act as natural lookouts and shaded dens, so scanning their edges at dawn is a dependable strategy.
Leopards: masters of the riverine trees
Leopards are the hardest of the three to find, yet the Serengeti's density of around 5.4 per 100 km² is among the highest recorded. The key is habitat: leopards favour the mature trees lining the Seronera River, where they haul kills into the branches away from lions and hyenas. Look up, not just out — a tail hanging from a sausage tree is often the only clue.
Cheetahs: built for the open plains
Unlike the ambush-reliant leopard, the cheetah is a creature of open space. The southern and central short-grass plains give it the unobstructed sightlines and running room it needs to reach sprint speeds in pursuit of Thomson's gazelle. Cheetahs hunt by day to avoid competition from larger nocturnal predators, which makes them the most reliably diurnal big cat to photograph.
Why the Serengeti feeds so many predators

When to plan your predator safari
For cheetahs and dramatic open-plains hunts, the southern short-grass plains during the December–March calving window are hard to beat. For year-round lions and leopards, the central Seronera region delivers regardless of season. Whichever you choose, patience at first light and a good guide who reads the grass will do more for your sightings than any single stat — but the numbers explain why the Serengeti remains the finest big-cat theatre in the world.
