Every year, more than a million wildebeest move across the plains of northern Tanzania in the largest overland mammal migration left on Earth. To stand inside it is to understand something our whole approach to hospitality rests on: we are the visitors here. The Singing Grass was built around a simple belief — wilderness should not have to change to accommodate luxury; luxury should learn to exist within wilderness.
Four of the world's last great wildernesses
Our tented camps operate in a handful of places that are, by any measure, irreplaceable — the central Serengeti, the calving plains of Ndutu, the Mara River country of the northern Serengeti, and the baobab landscapes of Tarangire. Each carries a natural signature no design studio could invent:
Central Serengeti — home to the ~1.3 million wildebeest of the Great Migration, the largest overland mammal movement on the planet.
Ndutu & the southern plains — where roughly 8,000 wildebeest calves are born every day at the February peak.
The Mara River, northern Serengeti — where an average of ~6,250 wildebeest drown each year while crossing, feeding around 1,100 tonnes of nutrients into the river's food web.
Tarangire — 550+ bird species among ancient baobabs and one of Tanzania's great dry-season elephant strongholds.

That singularity is also fragile. A landmark 2019 study in Science examined forty years of data from the edges of the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem and found a "squeeze": in some boundary areas the human population had risen by as much as 400% in a single decade, while in the most heavily used border zones, large-wildlife numbers had fallen by more than 75%. The core looks eternal. The edges — where tourism actually operates — are fraying.

An economy that both funds and burdens the wild
Conservation is not free, and in Tanzania it is largely paid for by people who come to look. Tourism now supports around 1.5 million jobs and roughly 17.2% of GDP — a record 2.14 million visitors in 2024 generated about USD 3.9 billion. Every ranger's salary and every reason a rural family has to value a lion alive is, ultimately, tied to that revenue.
But the same visitors also consume the wild. Camps use energy and water; vehicles burn diesel; and — the largest impact by far — guests fly thousands of kilometres to arrive. Globally, tourism accounts for about 8% of greenhouse-gas emissions, transport-dominated. The task is not to pretend otherwise, but to widen the gap between the good tourism funds and the harm it causes.
From "do less harm" to "leave more life"
Sustainable tourism asks a defensive question — how do we reduce our impact? Regenerative tourism asks a harder one: can tourism actively improve the systems it operates in? For us that is organised around six commitments:
Nature & biodiversity — protecting ecological relationships, not just iconic species.
Low-impact hospitality — beautiful camps with a deliberately small footprint.
Climate action — measuring emissions and cutting fossil-fuel dependence.
Community development — real opportunity for the neighbours of protected land.
Education, health & research — investing in knowledge and young Tanzanians.
Responsible governance — measurable ESG targets and transparent reporting.
A lighter footprint
Our tented camps are canvas, not concrete, and unfenced — so wildlife keeps its freedom of movement and the point is made plainly: we are guests in their ecosystem. Where we build, we favour recycled composite lumber over newly cut timber. And instead of the diesel generators that remote safari hospitality has always relied on, we build around the sun:
Diesel generator: roughly 80 kg of CO₂ for every 100 kWh of camp electricity.
Solar-first supply: essentially zero operational emissions.
Water: we've begun rainwater harvesting and are working toward measuring — and improving — water use per guest night.
The carbon we can't hide
For most guests, the single largest climate impact of a safari happens before they reach camp — in the long-haul flight. So we are honest about it, and we work in strict order: measure emissions, reduce them, transition to cleaner systems (including quieter, lower-emission game-drive activities), and only then contribute to high-integrity climate and nature projects.

Why you cannot plant a tree in the Serengeti
"Plant a tree, save the planet" is one of the most appealing ideas in modern environmentalism — and one of the easiest to get wrong here. Inside a national park, planting is forbidden for two reasons. First, conservation law: a national park is a strictly protected area where introducing vegetation is not permitted, so that natural processes govern the land. Second, ecology: this is a grassland shaped by fire and grazing, holding most of its carbon below ground. Push trees into these plains and you don't restore the ecosystem — you replace it.
So we separate two ideas that are usually confused. Inside the parks, the regenerative act is protection — keeping the land intact and letting the herds, fires and rains do their work. Restoration through planting belongs outside the park boundary, on community lands, school grounds and riverbanks where nature genuinely has been lost. The honest measure of success is not "how many trees did we plant?" but "how much nature actually recovered?"
Restoration is done with the people who live closest to the land — the communities whose numbers are rising fastest at the parks' edges. Around Mswakini, our work runs from beekeeping (with Mswakini Primary School and the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute) to classrooms and nutrition, to preventive health screening in villages where HIV prevalence runs at 4.4% nationally and falls hardest on women — always with dignity, confidentiality and a real path to care.
Measurable by design
ESG can't be built from anecdotes. As the Collection grows, we're introducing a structured measurement system — baselines, targets and honest reporting, published in an annual Impact Report that records shortfalls as well as wins. Among the indicators we intend to be held to:
Environment — renewable share of electricity, diesel and water per guest night, emissions, waste diverted, land under conservation or restoration.
Social — Tanzanian employment and leadership, women in the workforce, local procurement, students supported, health screenings enabled.
Governance — supplier and environmental standards, community consultation, ethical procurement, and progress against targets.
A different measure of luxury
Luxury can no longer be measured only by how much a place provides. Increasingly it is measured by how thoughtfully it exists — privacy over crowds, nature over construction, silence over engines, solar over diesel. Our success won't be counted in sustainability labels; it will be visible when less diesel burns, native vegetation recovers, a child has a better classroom, and a traveller returns home understanding that the Serengeti isn't just a beautiful place they visited, but something worth protecting.
